WinConnect Server XP แปลง WindowsXP ให้เป็น Terminal Server

Microsoft designed Windows XP so that only one user at a time could access a given PC, either via the local desktop or a remote Terminal Services client. But the OS and today's hardware can easily accommodate more concurrent users, especially for typical office chores. Enter WinConnect Server XP, a program that lets three remote users log onto a Windows XP system while someone is using the host machine locally.
ThinSoft recommends at least a 1-GHz CPU and 256MB of RAM to support one remote user and one local user. Each additional remote user calls for an extra 100 MHz of CPU speed and 64MB of memory. So, for example, a 2.4-GHz, 512MB system can support at least four concur- rent users.
WinConnect exploits Windows XP's built-in Terminal Services based on Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) 5.1. All of the application logic runs on the host machine; the client machine simply processes display updates and relays the user input to the host.
Small offices can run critical business applications on a WinConnect-equipped PC as the server and send them to remote desktops. Linux shops that need to run Windows programs occasionally can set up a Windows XP machine and have users access it via the WinConnect RDP 5.1 client for Linux ($99). And home users can unlock the shackles of a Smart Display device, which disables the local desktop when the mobile display is in use. With WinConnect, you can have multiple Smart Display devices accessing an XP machine without locking out local access to the system.
On our tests (using a 1-GHz Pentium III system with 512MB of memory as the host), we could not detect any sluggishness in True Color mode when running business applications remotely over a 10-Mbps network. WinConnect Server XP makes thin-client computing a viable option for small offices on a budget.

Thin Clients: Selecting the Right Desktop Strategy for Your Organization

How to test the Performance of a Thin Client Terminal

This article covers various considerations to be taken into account when testing thin client terminals. The aim of this document is to cover comparing different competing terminals – not different protocols – ie not RDP vs. ICA.
How to Test
The purpose of a thin client is to display the graphics primitives sent from the server in a way the user finds comfortable to use.

To make a meaningful comparison between different products it is important to remove the "human" element ie the use of the keyboard and mouse. There are many script based benchmarks that serve this purpose. (WinBench, Sysmarks, WinTach, Winstone...).
Considerations when using these Benchmarks
1 - To guarantee the reliability and repeatability of the tests we recommend using a dedicated machine (i.e. to be the only user) and to connect terminal under test directly to the server using a cross-over cable. This will avoid the effect of varying network load from the corporate network).

2. Most benchmarks are designed to test PCs or servers – the only relevant tests for thin-clients are the tests that measure graphical performance. (Disk, CPU, memory tests are irrelevant).

3 - The tests should lasts several minutes. This reduces measurement errors and reduces the effect of unavoidable non graphical functions such as opening files etc.

4 - Carry out the tests immediately after the logon, and reboot between each test. This will eliminate the effect of caching.
Interpretation of the Results
These benchmarks give a final score which is generally meaningless in a client/server environment. This score is based on 'system' performance and does not take into account network performance, which is an inherent factor in thin-client computing.

It is essential to consider impact of data-compression, data encryption and local caching when testing thin-clients, as these factors are not relevant when testing PCs and servers, so are not reflected in the benchmarks.

The only way to obtain a meaningful measurement from these benchmarks is to physically measure the time taken to complete with a stopwatch.

Note: The clock must be independent to the system being tested.

An Analysis of Thin Client Computing

This whitepaper looks at thin client computing based on Microsoft Windows 2000 terminal services. It examines what thin client computing is, its architecture, advantages and limitations. The paper also looks at a simple cost analysis of thin verses fat. While some of the benefits and cost savings are still relevant, the focus of the paper is on a true thin client environment using Windows based terminals, not fat or tubby clients connecting to Windows terminal services.

Thin Clients Are in (Again):

Thin Clients Are in (Again): Server-Based Computing Improves Security, Simplifies Management, Lowers Total Cost of Ownership and Saves the Environment

--------------

Thin clients are back in vogue, and this time it's not just hype. IT organizations today are giving thin-client computing a closer look because they are continually bombarded by daily security threats, overburdened by help-desk requests and hamstrung by the high cost of purchasing and managing PCs. In thin-client computing, much like the old days of mainframe computers, the data center powers the computing functions and stores all the applications and data. Information flows back and forth to thin clients, which are small desktop devices with no hard drives and limited functionality. As a result, data is more secure, and hardware and software is easier to manage and update because everything is stored centrally on servers. That, in turn, will save money.

Thin Computing ROI: The Untold Story

Thin computing is the complete spectrum of hardware, services, and software solutions that allow people using thin clients, PCs, wireless devices, and other systems to securely access the information and the applications they need. Enterprise thin clients, the desktop component of thin computing are one of the least understood hardware options available to today's IT managers, yet they are one of the most cost-effective and secure options. This paper analyzes the opportunity for enterprise thin clients, focusing specifically on how a thin computing model compares with traditional client/server architecture with PCs when it comes to ROI.
